Workshop Overview:

This workshop has been designed for the retail community in partnership with City Square Shopping Centre.

Attendance at this course will result in the employee being able to:

  • Understand criminal law relating to the use of force in the retail environment.
  • Understand how to recognise, assess and reduce risk in conflict situations
  • Manage and de-escalate conflict and aggression.

Outcome 1

Understand the law relating to aggression and self-defence

1.1 Understand the law relating to minimum force and self-defence

Outcome 2

Understand the causes of aggressive behaviour.

2.1 Understand common causes of aggression in retail

Outcome 3

Conduct Risk Assessments

3.1 Recognise pre-incident indicators

3.2 Conduct a Dynamic Risk Assessment for persons and environments

3.3 Understand measures to improve personal safety and awareness.

Outcome 4

Understand how to recognise, assess and reduce risk in conflict situations.

4.1 Recognise the Trigger Phase

4.2 Recognise the Escalation Phase

4.3 Recognise the Crisis Phase

4.4 Recognise the Recovery Phase

Outcome 5

Understand how to communicate effectively in emotive situations and de-escalate conflict.

6.1 Demonstrate the correct stance when dealing with potential aggressor

6.2 Understand verbal communication procedures including de-escalation strategies
